Combatting Separation Anxiety

Updated: Dec 21, 2021

Lockdown dogs will not know what has hit them in 2022!

With everyone returning to work - back in offices and out of the home and kids back at school, our wonderful dogs have been so used to a full home and constant human attachment that it can be a hard transition when they’re suddenly left at home.

There is a lot of advice online about canine enrichment and dog toys…but WHAT if your dog won’t even EAT on their own, let alone play with a toy without you?! What if they have a complete meltdown when you leave and start destroying the house?!

Well, the key is patience…and start making some small changes to teach them some independence.

We recommend forming an Action Plan. Get in touch and we can email you a step by step plan and progress chart to print and follow, in conjunction with the following, you’ll have solved the problem in no time!

  1. Commit to Separation Anxiety Training for 1 Month - This means they cannot be left alone for long periods during this transition period as you gradually build up their tolerance to smaller separations (eg nipping to the toilet).

  2. Find a Reliable Dog Minder - Google Dog Playcare and Daycare Services in your area, or reach out to your local community. If you’re in Cheltenham, Moorabbin, Bentleigh East, Mordialloc, Beaumaris, Heatherton, Parkdal, Oakleigh South or Surrounds then get in touch!

  3. Start Teaching Independence - This comes in three parts : A) Eating Independence (ditch the bowl and get some puzzle feeders and snuffle mats) B) Sleeping Independence (once you have worn them out, insist that they stay in their own bed for naptime) and for small dog breeds C) Social Independence (Not picking them up or shielding them from social interactions at the park).
